Poaching Business
Today I was looking at a forum and someone had posted that they had listed some contact details of clients they had performed SEO for, to allow potential clients to ring up and check their feelings towards the SEO company. They had also had clients contact them about another SEO company sending emails to the client whose details were published saying that they could provide a better service and guarantee first page listings within their time period.
Whats wrong with this?
Well for a start, poaching business is never good. The original SEO firm had done a good job and thus asked their client if they could use them as a case study which they obliged and agreed to publishing contact details. If the second SEO company comes along and tries to ’steal’ your clients what are you supposed to do?
What do I do to prevent this?
Firstly, case studies are a great way of proving that you and your business can bring success to a client who decides to purchase your services. One thing I would say is to not put the contact details on a website; but offer them to someone who is making a genuine enquiry through use of your contact form or telephone number.
What should I do if someone has done this?
Initially contact the client who was sent an email and ask for them to forward it to yourself. Once you have the email seek legal advice and send it to your legal adviser. If you have done your job and your clients are happy with the service you have provided then there is no need to worry. Guaranteeing first page positions is a silly idea for an SEO company - I myself would love to know how they guarantee positions as any SEO knows it is impossible.
