SEO in Sheffield
Sheffield was founded in the early 12th century by the Lord of the manor known as William de Lovetot. He then went on to build a castle on the side of Castle Market and a church on the site of the Cathedral. A small town grew between the castle and the church. Sheffield only had a population of a few hundred which to us now would see tiny but actually was a fairly sized town.
Sheffield would seem more like a village than a town to us. Most of the population back then was part time farmers. Sheffield was also well known for making wool. By the 17th century the population in Sheffield had increased to around 5,000. In the 18th century Sheffield's industries took off and due to this Sheffield became well known for its iron industry.
In 1801, Sheffield's population had continued to increase and was now over 31,000. By this time Sheffield was well known as a large town and by 1851 had grown to over 135,000 people. Like most counties Sheffield went through a period where the town was dirty and unsanitary, but not long after conditions did improve.
In 1900, the population was at its highest of over 400,000 people. Industries such as iron and steel had declined and in the 21st century Sheffield were no longer known for its iron and steel industry but for its hi-tech manufacturing industry. In 2003 Sheffield also opened there National Ice centre which is still very popular today.
