Early Yorkshire was densely populated with forest, but a lot of it had been removed to make way for agriculture and farmers wishing to farm the land. This was also a start of the population rapidly growing again. until the 14th Century when the Black Death struck which killed approx. 1/3 of the population.
Yorkshire also played a part in a civil war; The War of the Roses. This was fought between the House of York and House of Lancaster who were both after the throne. The battles continued until Henry the VII married Elizabeth of York which ended the wars. The red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York was then combined to form the Tudor Rose.
In the 19th Century the coal, steel and textile industries grew rapidly, as did the population. Yorkshire then became the main County for the production and development of the railway industry. Most of Yorkshire remains rural except the main cities and towns such as Halifax, Sheffield and York.
