Derby began as a Roman fort. The fort was called Derventio, however in the 4th century Roman civilians declinded and the Roman buildings were therefore abandoned and fell into ruins. After this, there may have been a Saxon village on the site of Derby after the Saxons had left, however the Danes found the town of Derby about 873 AD after they had invaded England.
The name Derby has been formed by Danish word Deor which means deer settlement. Derby was not just a fort settlement but also a place of trade. Craftsmen such as blacksmiths, coopers, carpenters and many more worked within this little town. At this time the population of Derby was only about 2,000 peopl, which may seem small to us now but at the time was quite a large town.
Over the years several trades have took place in Derby such as wool, leather gloves and saddles and many more. Butchers, bakers and brewers were also very popular back in the early years of Derby and some butchers and bakers are still very popular today.
In the 19th century Derby continued to grow, due to the cloth industry florishing and other industries such as brewing and clockmaking. In 1717, the first ever silk mill opened with Derby and gained a dramatic amount of interest, meaning a high increase of population also took place. Due to this rapid increase, Derby had to begin building more new houses so that they did not gain the reputation of poor living like other communities had gained.
In 1977, Rolls Royce opened a factory and aircrafts and enginees were made. In 1977 Derby was made into a city. Today as it stands Derby's population is 222,000 and is still increasing.
