Search Engine Optimisation(SEO) Manchester
Manchester began as a wooden fort built by the Roman army. The Roman's called the fort Mamuciam. Not long after the fort was built, a civilian settlement grew around it. Soldiers provided a market to the civilians so they could sell and buy goods such as shoes and wine. In the 11th century Manchester was a small village but things began to change in the 12th century. The population of Manchester grew and trade and commerce grew dramatically.
The village of Manchester was founded into a town in the 13th century and in 1222 Manchester gained the right to hold an annual fair. The annual fairs were like markets, but were only held once a year. These fairs attracted buyers and sellers from all over Lancashire. In the Middle Ages Manchester was the best medium sized town. Manchester at this point was known for its wool industry and gradually grew popular for cotton and silk.
In the 17th century, Manchester was known for looking exceedingly well and the buildings were mostly made from stone and brick. Within the 18th century population had grown and was around 10,000, meaning Manchester was still known as a medium sized town. In the 18th century the industrial revolution began, therefore meaning population dramatically increase and by the end of the 18th century was 70,000.
Manchester continued to be famous for manufacturing wool, cotton and silk and in 1729 a cotton exchange was built so cotton could be bought and sold. Due to the popularity of this industry, the textiles industry also boomed. Changes and improvements continued to be made in Manchester and in 1719 the first newspaper was published. In the 19th century the population of Manchester had soared from 70,000 to 108,000 and continued to rise to over 142,000. However like most communities in the 19th century Manchester had some dreadful slums, such as streets weren't paved, rubbish i.e. vegetables etc were rotting in heaps in the streets and overall it just wasn't very hygienic. Living conditions also took a turn for the worst and families were sharing a cellar which contained no furniture, meaning they slept on straw and they were terribly damp. Therefore due to this conditions disease was rife.
However there were some important improvements made to Manchester in the 19th century. A railway opened that ran to Liverpool and the first horse drawn carriages ran on the streets of Manchester. In 1838 Manchester was made a Borough and public parks were created such as Peel park, Phillips park and Queens Park. Manchester however was still very popular for its wool, cotton and silk industry. In 1851 Manchester's population was still increasing and was 186,000. At this point the population grew due to the amount of Jews fleeing from Eastern Europe. In 1853 Manchester was made into a city and buildings such as libraries, the town hall and the ship canal opened which gained alot of interest to Manchester as a city. In 1972 Manchester library founded with Manchester university which originally opened in 1903.
In the 20th century there was some diversion of the industries in Manchester and new industries occurred such as flour mills etc. The old industries such as wool, cotton and silk declined. Engineering also suffered dramatically within the 20th century. However tourism became an important industry for Manchester and the Museum of science and industry opened in 1969. Manchester continued to expand and was also known for its retail centres. The Arndale centre was therefore built in 1970 and opened in 1976. It was fully completed in 1979.
Due to the expansion of Manchester the first council houses began to be built. Also in 1970 Chinatown began to grow and in 1987 a Chinese arch was erected along side the Chinese Art centre that then opened in the same year. Population continued to grow and metrolink trams began to run in 1992 followed by the Trafford shopping centre in 1998. Manchester is still undergoing changes today and the population for Manchester will never stop growing and currently is over 438,000.
