In the 18th century, Preston was known as a pretty town and people who lived there were very proud to be a part of it. Preston continued to trade to Europe and the west Indies. This continued for centuries, and wool and linen was produced within the town of Preston. Due to the high demand the first cotton mill was opened in 1771.

By 1801 the population in Preston had increased to 11,887 and was known as a large town. In the 19th century like most towns Preston was a dirty and unsanitary town, but the conditions did improve by the late 19th century. In 1901 new industries were established such as electrical goods and engineering. Further to the new industries population continued to grow and is now over 129,000 people. In 2001 Preston founded the football museum and since then has gained a regional shopping centre and was officially made into a city in 2002.
